On January 1, 2012, the Sri Lankan government introduced a new online visa system known as Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), commonly referred to as Sri Lanka eVisa. Travelers planning a short visit to Sri Lanka are required to obtain a valid visa from the Department of Immigration & Emigration in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka eVisa application is entirely conducted online, and approval notifications are communicated through email. The Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) has replaced the traditional method of applying for a Sri Lanka visa in person through the Sri Lankan Embassy/Consulate.
There are four categories of short-term Sri Lanka Visas, known as ETA Approvals, each catering to specific purposes of travel:
1. Sri Lanka Tourist Visa: Issued for tourism, sightseeing, and leisure purposes.
2. Sri Lanka Visit Visa: Issued for visiting family, friends, or relatives in Sri Lanka.
3. Sri Lanka Business Visa: Issued for engaging in business activities within Sri Lanka, such as attending meetings, conferences, seminars, or training sessions.
4. Sri Lanka Transit Visa: Issued for travelers transiting through Sri Lanka to a third country.
